Senate approves film co-production agreement between Mexico and Switzerland

April 27, 2018

With 71 votes in favor and 0 against, the Senate of the Mexican Republic approved the Co-production Agreement between Mexico and Switzerland, which will allow better conditions for Mexican and Swiss producers to access project financing from the Mexican Institute of Film and Television.

This approval took place as part of a discussion of international cooperation tools, specifically with the European region, including the import of cultural goods and cooperation agreements in the fields of education, youth, sport and culture.

The Co-Production Agreement between the two countries has its precedent in 2017, when the Governments of Mexico and Switzerland signed collaboration agreements to protect illicitly imported cultural heritage and for film production based on support for projects and their creators.

This bi-national agreement renews a dialogue of more than seven decades of diplomatic relations and reaffirms the commitment to care for the cultural heritage and identity of peoples, as well as initiating a point of convergence in the creation, production and distribution of movies.

A year earlier, in 2016, the Imcine and the Federal Office of Culture of the Swiss Confederation signed a letter of intent for film co-production. This is part of the 31st Guadalajara International Film Festival (FICG, for its acronym in Spanish).

The Senate is expected to approve the Co-production Agreement between Mexico and Italy in the near future.
