Pearsonwidrig Dancetheater adorns the 23rd edition of the José Limón Dance Festival

April 11, 2018

With a program that will include the participation of seven companies, two foreign, two national and three local, plus another 10 local groups that will participate in the celebration of the International Dance Day, the 32nd edition of the José Limón Contemporary Dance Festival will be held.

The meeting will take place from April 23 to April 29 with the motto: To love the sanity of man and dance it and will be attended by the companies Pearsonwidrig Dancetheater (United States), which will visit Mexico for the first time; Physical Momentum Project (Costa Rica), 4x4, Compañía Danza Joven Sinaloa, Delfos Danza Contemporánea, Los Innatto and Zona Cero.

Héctor Chávez Fierro, director and founder of the festival, explained that the activities will take place in Los Mochis, Culiacán, Guasave and Mazatlán, where the 31st José Limón National Dance Prize will be awarded and which marks the beginning of the program that includes 17 performances and master classes by the invited groups.

The director said that the visit of the Pearsonwidrig Dancetheater Company, under the direction of Sara Pearson and Patrik Widrig, represents an enormous expectation for this edition, since it will be a very interesting dance, with touches of humor and sarcasm, but very careful in its form.

"They are pioneers in holding events in alternative spaces. It is a repertoire company that has just released its new choreography Golden, which unfortunately, due to technical reasons, will not be presented, however, they bring very representative works that have been danced all over the world, from Asia, Europe and of course in the United States. Here they will give three presentations and will return to their country”.

As part of the festival, the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Compañía Sinaloense Delfos Danza Contemporánea, founded by Claudia Lavista and Víctor Manuel Ruiz, will also take place at the Teatro Ángela Peralta, with the premiere of the choreography Estado latente.

On this occasion, Héctor Chávez stressed, Delfos has been developing a series of presentations since last year, which is why its anniversary presentation at this festival was a must with the staging of this premiere piece that includes live music.

On April 29, International Dance Day, 10 local companies will come together to share a program that will include choreographies that have been awarded the Culiacán Prize for Choreography.

Chávez Fierro highlighted that this festival has meant an important growth in regional contemporary dance, as thanks to its realization since 1986 two schools and six companies have been consolidated in the state.

"We already have two professional contemporary dance schools, one in Mazatlan and the other in Culiacan; six companies have been formed in this period and it has had a great influence on the professionalization of all those involved in the discipline," he concluded.
