Mexican film noir also arrives in Paris

El Indio Fernández´s movies to be shown at MoMA

February 27, 2018

For the third time, the Morelia International Film Festival (FICM) will present a film series of classic Mexican movies at the Museum of Modern Art in New York (MoMA), now dedicated to Emilio El Indio Fernández from March 1 to 13.

Daniela Michel, director of FICM, pointed out that El Indio Fernández’s thirteen movies will be presented on this occasion, after the season was dedicated to Julio Bracho last year and to the Mexican film noir in 2015.

“This is the third time we have collaborated with MoMA and for us it is very important as a festival to continue to promote Mexican cinema throughout the year and more than anything else if we can also spread the amazing heritage, the film culture of Mexico”.

In an interview with the Department of Culture, the Mexican Noir Film program that was presented three years ago at MoMA, will now be at the Cinémathèque in Paris from March 7 to 11.

“We are working very hard in the promotion of classic Mexican cinema and it’s great to be at MoMA and the Cinémathèque Française, the most important art cinema exhibition sites in the world ".

Regarding the series entitled El Indio: The movies of Emilio Fernández, Daniela Michel highlighted that it will cover almost four decades of cinematographic work in which this iconic character participated as an actor, writer, director and producer from 1935 to 1974.

“We will present among others movies the first one starring El Indio Fernández, Janitzio, directed by Carlos Navarro in 1935, a story that narrates and represents very well the indigenous culture of Michoacán”.

Afterwards, there will be a presentation of movies directed by Emilio Fernández especially during his golden age in the 1940s, among them: El Fugitivo, which he directed together with John Ford, to conclude with Bring me the head of Alfredo García by Sam Peckinpah, where he participated as an actor.

There will also be the screening of: María Candelaria, Flor Silvestre, La Perla, Enamorada, Río Escondido, Salón México, Maclovia, Pueblerina, Víctimas del pecado and El rincón de las vírgenes.

There will be daily showings,"in this case there are two weeks followed by screenings of El Indio Fernández in New York”, said Daniela Michel, after the two previous series lasted only seven days.

The public response to this type of series has been very successful, that is why MoMA continues to work with the Morelia International Film Festival, as there is a lot of interest in Mexican culture and very good reviews have been received in newspapers such as the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal.

For 2018 it was decided to show the movies of El Indio Fernández at the public's request, since although he is a well-known figure, it has been a long time since his movies were seen on the big screen.

Michel pointed out that the organization of this series has taken more than eight months of work and that it has been possible thanks to the support of the Cineteca Nacional, the Filmoteca de la UNAM and the Fundación Televisa.

On the other hand, the Noir Film Season entitled Mexico at Midnight: Film Noir from Mexican Cinema's Golden Age, will be presented from March 7 to 11 at the Cinemateca in Paris.

The program includes seven movies, masterpieces of Mexican cinema, by exponents such as Roberto Gavaldón, including En la palma de tu mano and La diosa arrodillada, as well as Crepúsculo by Julio Bracho.
