They are building an artistic residence in Africa

Liga-Teatro Elástico will participate in the Casteliers Festival

February 20, 2018

The Liga-Teatro Elástico, a Mexican theater company of objects and animated figures, will participate in the 13th Casteliers Festival, puppets for adults and children in Montreal, Canada.

Before its presentation on March 8th, the company's founders, the actress and theater director Jacqueline Serafín and plastic artist Iker Vicente will give a workshop entitled Creación de bestias ambulantes (Creation of walking beasts).

Serafín, beneficiary of the Fonca's Scenic Creators program, explained that the workshop lasts 36 hours and will be held the first week of March with the intention of building and animating large puppets with characteristic traits of animals in motion.

Having mechanical engineering elements and many traditions of puppet art, the participants, divided into teams of five, will be inspired by mechanical toys, tools, ritual objects, masks, machines, mobiles, installations and kinetic sculptures for the design and manufacture of each puppet.

The animals designed by the participants will coexist with wolves and a deer already made by the company Liga-Teatro Elástico and will be part of the show Las Bestias danzan o el sigiloso conjuro de lo salvaje (The beasts dance or the stealthy spell of the wild), responsible for opening the 2018 Casteliers Festival.

All puppeteers who are part of the training are expected to participate in the presentation, which will also count with the presence of several children from Outremont district.

According to Jacqueline Serafín, Las bestias danzan …is a street show in which the public meets animals on a large scale: a pack of wolves and a deer.

The project is based on an interdisciplinary research carried out in Mexico, based on the little known role played by the Mexican grey wolf (Canis lupus baileyi, now extinct in wildlife) both in the ecosystems and in the imaginary of many native cultures of our country.

Also, the company will also exhibit a short film of the construction process of Las bestias danzan…  and will give a lecture at the University of Montreal.

Project The Crossing of the continents

In addition to La Liga-Teatro Elástico's presence in Montreal, Canada, plastic artist Iker Vicente is  in Burkina Faso, Africa, finishing a residence for the creation and construction of puppets with local artists.

The activity is part of La Traversée des continents (The Crossing of the continents), under the direction of Helene Ducharme, from Theatre Motus.

“It is a project between the Canadian company Theatre Motus; Theatre Spiral, Switzerland, Troupé Sô, Mali and La Liga-Teatro Elástico, Mexico. It will premiere in Montreal in November of this year and then will be presented in Africa, Switzerland and finally in the city of Guadalajara, Mexico with local actors in 2019”, said the Member of the National System of Art Creators Fonca.

He stressed that the show is aimed at teenagers and addresses the journey of two young people who try to reconstruct the broken ties between their cultures of origin and their lives, the cycles of nature, the mythical world, cultural boundaries and the process of becoming adults.

“The residence was built with local artists, puppeteers, maskers, actors, dancers, looking for the esthetics and vision of the African world to be integrated first hand”, said Iker Vicente from Burkina Faso.

The Lia-Teatro Elástico has participated in international festivals in cities such as Montreal (Canada), Cape Town (South Africa), Barcelona, San Sebastian, Tolosa and Santander (Spain); Mexico in Guadalajara, León, Tlaxcala, Aguascalientes, Zacatecas, San Miguel de Allende and Mexico City, among others.

Its installations have been exhibited at the University Museum of El Chopo in 2014 and at the Museum Ex Teresa Arte Actual in 2016, among other equally important sites.

They have given workshops of animation and invention of puppets for professionals in Mexico and abroad at the Institut del Teatre (Barcelona, 2016) as part of the IF festival. They have also participated in the International Symposiums on Theater of Objects, Objects with Objectives (South Africa, 2017) and Object Dramaturgies (IF Barcelona, 2016).
