February 20, 2018

Under the motto Imagine that I imagine you, the 7th International Reading Fair of Yucatan (FILEY, for its acronym in Spanish) will offer in its seventh edition a large list of international, national and local authors, children activities as well as meetings with the assistance of professionals and specialists.

The event to be held from March 10 to March 18 at the Yucatan Convention and Exhibition Center Siglo XXI and the Great Museum of the Mayan World, will host Russia, Guanajuato and the University of Guanajuato as a country, state and institution of higher education guests of honor, respectively.

In a press conference the director of FILEY, Rodolfo Cobos Argüelles, pointed out that the event is not a book fair but a meeting that seeks to promote reading in children and adults.

He highlighted that the fair will be attended by Argentinean César Aira, Colombian Amalia Andrade, Mexican Laura Esquivel, and Joselo Rangel, member of the group Café Tacvba, who will present a book of stories.

And will be atended by Alberto Ruy Sánchez, Prize of Art and Literature 2017, Xavier Velasco, who celebrates fifteen years of the publication of his work in 2018, Diablo Guardián, Élmer Mendoza, Antonio Malpica, Fabrizio Mejía Madrid, Alberto Chimal, Imanol Caneyada, Verónica Murguía, Martha Riva Palacios Obón, Luis Bernardo Pérez, Bernardo Fernández BEF, Antonio Deltoro, Ana García Bergua and Bibiana Camacho among others.

He explained that there will also be special tributes for the centenaries of the writers Juan José Arreola, Guadalupe "Pita" Amor, Ali Chumacero, Doctor Carlos Urzaiz Jiménez and the chemist Felipe Escalante Ruz, as well as an event in honor of the painter Fernando Castro Pacheco.

In coordination with the University of Guanajuato, he said, the writer Jorge Ibargüengoitia will be remembered on the 90th anniversary of his birth, the Yucatecan playwright Wilberth Herrera, who would turn 75, as well as Raúl Renán and Raúl Cáceres Carenzo, who died in 2017.

One of the novelties in this edition of the Fair is the creation of the FILEY Journalism Award, which will recognize the activity of informers who report on the work of art and culture in Mexico, whose winner will be announced on February 23, said the official.

“This recognition will join the highest award given by FILEY, the Excellence Award in letters José Emilio Pacheco, which the poet David Huerta will receive”.

Other activities that will take place during the nine days of the fair are: the fourth National Encounter of Cultural Journalism that will address the theme of the Chronicle, the International Congress of UC-Mexicanistas, the Second Encounter of Cardboard and Comic Strip, and a Film Encounter, among others.

“Students of all educational levels are welcome and over 25,000 children have confirmed basic level so far”, he said.

Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Mexico, Eduard R. Malayan, said it was an honor that Russia is the guest of honor in FILEY, and to concentrate efforts along with the state of Guanajuato. "I'd say two living forces are connected."

Concerning the activities that Russia will offer, he said there will be artistic groups that will give master classes of traditional Russian dances, presentations, and even the presence of the World Cup. He noted that Russia, Merida and therefore Mexico have an interest in research on the Maya.

“We want to take advantage of this opportunity to show how Russia, art, culture and people are. In Merida, since the city represents a climate of many ethnic groups and languages, Russia is the same, we will have the possibility to show them the condition of having many languages and ethnic groups. I guarantee that no one will be bored”, said the diplomat.

Raúl Arias Lovillo, academic secretary of the University of Guanajuato, said the state will offer 63 activities. “We have put together a program to showcase the strengths of our academic, artistic and cultural production of our students, faculty and staff”.

He announced that the emblematic groups of the University will participate, such as the Folkloric Ballet, the student band. There will also be dance groups, mimes, staging, editorial presentations, film series, and talks about native authors of the state such as Efraín Huerta, Jorge Ibargüengoitia and Margarita Villaseñor.

“We would like to highlight the presentation of the copy of the second edition of Mexico's El Quijote, that is part of the institution's heritage, located in our library”.

Finally, the rector of the Autonomous University of Yucatan, José de Jesús Williams, said that FILEY is the festival where college students meet and share their passion for knowledge, as well as the space where the community reinforces its contact with society by presenting results of their research in different areas of knowledge.

“FILEY is the living representation of the great variety of ideas and forms of being on this earth, if something characterizes this seventh edition of this festival is the openness to all ideological currents, tendencies and philosophies, the inclusion of the most varied artistic disciplines, literary genres, journalism and cinema, in short, what distinguishes us as creative beings”, he said.

FILEY's task is to generate a space of cultural convergence through interdisciplinary activities in which the arts as a whole are manifested as humanistic promotion, giving priority to reading as the main instrument for social development.
