February 13, 2018

A panoramic view of contemporary Québec cinema that invites us to question, think, love, travel and dream of new worlds is what will be shown in the fourth edition of the Quebec Film Festival (QuebecineMx 2018).

The details of the event were announced in a press conference held on Tuesday morning, February 13 in room 7 Alejandro Galindo of the Cineteca Nacional.

The attendees were: Nelson Carro, director of Broadcasting and Programming at the Cineteca Nacional; Jean-Sébastien Durocher, founder, director and designer of QuebecineMx 2018 programming; Stéphanie Allard Gomez, delegate general of Quebec in Mexico; Sophie Bédard Marcotte, filmmaker and director of Claire l’hiver (Winter Claire) and Antonio Serrano, director of the creative studio BAMF.

Some of the directors will be present, including Philippe Falardeau, Sophie Bédard Marcotte, Robin Aubert, Céline Baril, Jesse Klein and Sylvain L' Espérance.

Carro commented that QuebecineMx 2018 is a space that exhibits the diversity of Quebec cinema and rather than following a central line or concern, what is shown is the variety and core themes that interest Québec directors.

“It is an exhibition that has become a must-see and shows the great variety of the movies made there showing its multiculturalism”.

Stéphanie Allard Gomez highlighted that this exhibition shows the strong ties that have united Mexico and Quebec for over 40 years.

“And culture is clearly one of the main pillars of its relationship. In addition, cinema is a focal point of the wealth and cooperation of our nations”.

“As a representative of the government of Quebec, I am proud to see the important exchanges between our countries, what better example than the participation of six successful Quebec filmmakers who will attend the screening of the fourth Quebec Film Festival”.

Meanwhile, Jean-Sébastien Durocher stressed the importance of filmmakers presence at screenings in Mexico, as he said,"we want to generate a dialogue between the movies, its directors, the public and the press to think about the world”.

He also said that four documentaries will stand out in the exhibition giving a vision of tradition and how this genre is made masterly in Quebec: Fighting through the night, 24 Davids, A moon of nickel and ice and Mansion.

The fourth edition of the Quebec Film Festival will be opened on Thursday, February 15, at 19.00 p.m, with the screening of the movie Winter Claire where its director Sophie Bédard Marcotte will be present.

Regarding her movie, the filmmaker commented that it is a work that speaks of limits as a possibility of creation using the ways that are more at hand.

"This is my first time in Mexico and I'm very excited. I play the role of an alter ego that has a difficult winter and we follow its ups and downs in the movie”.

“It's the first time I've presented my movie outside of Canada and I'm very anxious to hear the reactions of the Mexican audience that I know is very curious to see movies”, she said.

On February 21 and 22, talks on documentary film as an artistic expression of the new social order will be held in collaboration with the Ingmar Bergman Chair of UNAM.

Film critic Carlos Bonfil will talk to visual artist and filmmaker Sylvain L' Espérance and essayist Fernanda Solórzano will talk to visual artist, photographer and filmmaker Céline Baril.
