FLAIRCK visits Mexico for the first time

December 15, 2017

The Dutch-Belgian group FLAIRCK, an experimental proposal that brings together the sounds of folk, chamber music, progressive rock, traditional Dutch music, jazz and blues, started touring Mexico with a concert offered last night December 14 at the Circo Volador, located in Mexico City.

The concept created in 1978 by Erik and Hans Visser, was renewed on 2017, leaving the original members of the ensemble to young virtuoso instrumentalists: the violinists Zhazira Ukeyeva, Mart Flecijn, and Liesbeth Lambrecht, bassist Joris Vanvinckenroye, and Mexican guitarist Pablo Patricio Ortiz (member since 2007) acting as head of the group.

The Mexican musician shared in an interview that the FLAIRCK project presents a mixture of two things: keeping alive the tradition and the traditional way of doing things inside the group, opening a new creative stage.

He said that the original members decided to leave for reasons of age and health but disagreed the group should end. “The idea was to look for musicians with a certain profile and keep alive the group's tradition and its methodology of doing things. Let’s say that I am the one assigned to this task”.

Pablo Patricio Ortiz explained that FLAIRCK began as a group with acoustic instruments close to the people, without much paraphernalia. “We continue to present a completely acoustic and instrumental ensemble, as well as a type of composition”, he said.

The proposal presents from the beginning their own compositions, in this sense Pablo Ortiz points out that the new FLAIRCK will also create its own compositions.

“The idea is to maintain that spirit of fusing different music, using instruments from different cultures in an original way, not sticking to traditions but finding our own language”.

When referring to the new members of the group, he explained that they were selected for having been trained in the musical language with creative ability. “We have musicians who are virtuosos of their instrument, who contribute ideas and not just perform”, he said.

In this way, Pablo Ortiz said that the group has the violinists Zhazira Ukeyeva, from Kazakhstan, who has a wide baggage of Eastern European music; the Belgian Mart Flecijn, with experience in the world of jazz and improvisation; the violist Liesbeth Lambrecht, known in her country, Belgium, for working with progressive rock groups; and the bassist Joris who has showed interesting compositions.

“Together we make a new sound, something fresh, different from what the group had done, but at the same time respecting or recovering certain traditions”, explained Ortiz.

The Forum La Mueca, located in the historic center of the city of Morelia, made arrangements for the New FLAIRCK to arrive in Mexico and offer a tour visiting Morelia, Michoacán, Zacatecas, and Aguascalientes, celebrating its 25 years of autonomous work.

In its presentations, FLAIRCK will present part of the emblematic repertoire developed in almost forty years with new arrangements and compositions of recent creation, informed Pablo Ortiz.

“We will offer a fresh look at the old compositions that we could call the group's greatest hits. For us it is important at this moment to make a little mix of the two things. We want people to see that we are continuing the whole tradition of the group”.

Pablo Ortiz said about arriving in Mexico for the first time that the group members are happy and at the same time eager for the reaction they will receive from the public.

“People don't know what to expect from us and we don't know what to expect from people. I think it will be interesting, we like this situation of confusing, in the sense of surprising, that they listen something new, something that is original, something that they cannot easily listen with another group”.

"An encounter for the first time is interesting. We hope that people will be receptive and enjoy themselves”.

The also composer highlighted FLAIRCK's improvisation on stage, he commented that it is a tool that has always been present in the methodology of the group.

“We arrive at the concert with something written or an elaborate idea, but we try to maintain a space of flexibility to give rise to improvisation, which is important for us because it gives a different life to music, it is an unrepeatable act that happens at the moment, which depends on chemistry, and that is something we’re interested in keeping”.

“In our music there is a little bit of that balance between written music in detail and other parts where we give instrumentalists the opportunity to express themselves directly at the moment”.

The new FLAIRCK will be presented in Morelia, Michoacán, at the La Mueca Forum, located in Aquiles Serdán 797, Colonia Centro, on December 16 and 17 at 19:00 p.m.

On Wednesday December 20 at 20:00 p.m. at the Teatro Morelos in Aguascalientes. On Thursday December 21 at 18:00 p.m. at the Plaza de Armas in Zacatecas, and closing in Morelia, Michoacán on Friday December 22 at the Teatro Stella Inda IMSS in Morelia, at 19:00 p.m.

Tickets cost $150, except for the Teatro Morelos in Aguascalientes, which cost $50. Social networks: Facebook: flairck. official.
