Fénix Film Awards recognize Mexican cinema

The big winner of an evening of cinema and music was the Chilean movie Una mujer extraordinaria, during the fourth edition of the Fénix Film Awards, which recently took place at the Teatro de la Ciudad Esperanza Iris in Mexico City.

Nevertheless, Mexican cinema was also the focus, as Everardo González's movie La libertad del diablo (The Freedom of the Devil) won three awards: Best Documentary Feature Film, Best Documentary Photography (María Secco) and Best Original Music (Quincas Moreia).

The event, which celebrates the labor of those who work in cinema in Latin America, Spain and Portugal, has awarded series for the first time this year. That is why Club de cuervos by Gaz Alazraki was recognized as Best Comedy Series.

The internationally recognized work of the Mexican decorator and artistic director Eugenio Caballero was also a reason to celebrate, as his work in the U.S.-Spanish co-production Un montruo viene a verme (A Monster comes to see me) won him the prize for Best Art Design. This movie was also recognized with the Best Sound and Exhibitors Awards, chosen by the audience.

 Although the winner was Una mujer extraordinaria by Sebastián Lelio who won three important categories: Best Fiction Film, Best Director and Best Female Performance (a splendid Daniela Vega at the moment of her thanks).

 Oscar Martinez won the Best Male Performance for his work in El ciudadano ilustre (Gaston Duprat and Mariano Cohn). Peruvian Isaac Leon Frias won the Fénix Critical Work Award, and Argentine actress Norma Aleandro was awarded the Fénix Career Award.

The Spanish movie Estiu 1993 by Carla Simón won the Best Screenplay. The Argentinian movie, El invierno se quedó con el huevo won the Best Fiction Photography thanks to Ramiro Civita’s photography.

The evening was animated by several musical performances. Among them, the “Almodóvar girl', Rossy de Palma, who started with a version of Quién será accompanied by the Pérez Prado Orchestra. Then, Natalia Lafourcade impressed with Hasta la raiz, which sounded harmonious thanks to the clear chords of the kora played by Gambian Foday Musa Suso. Finally, Molotov put the audacious seal on the night, with his well-known song Gimme the power.
