María Cristina García Cepeda visited both places

Intense work in Taxcala and State of Mexico to restore the heritage

A significant amount of progress has been made in restoring the historic monuments affected in Tlaxcala by the earthquakes of last September, according to the report received by the secretary of culture, María Cristina García Cepeda, during her attendance, with presidential representation, at the first report of Governor Marco Antonio Mena Rodríguez, held on Tuesday, December 5.

The affected properties in Tlaxcala, according to the report of the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH, for its acronym in Spanish), are so far: 133 buildings of historic importance, 118 temples and 15 civil buildings. Progress has been made in the support of vaults, towers and columns in religious sites such as the Temple of San Francisco Tepeyanco, the Church of San José, the Basilica of Nuestra Señora de Ocotlán, the Temple of San Felipe Hidalgo, the chapel of San Diego Alcalá, as well as the historical murals of the Palacio Municipal de Tlaxcala.

Also, damaged structures have also been secured, gypsum cores have been classified and religious work and other buildings are being restored.

Governor Marco Antonio Mena Rodriguez said that he has worked closely with the Department of Culture of the Government of the Republic in the restoration of this heritage, for which reason he asked García Cepeda to give his gratitude to President Enrique Peña Nieto for the support received.

In addition, this report adds to the results witnessed by García Cepeda when touring four municipalities and nine affected areas last Thursday in the State of Mexico.

During her visit to temples and churches, she was accompanied by Diego Prieto, general director of INAH; Arturo Balandrano, national coordinator of Historical Monuments, and the engineers responsible for the restoration of the Chapel of Santa María, Chapel of San Sebastián, Temple of San Juan Bautista, Convent of the Divino Salvador and Temple of San Simonito.

There was also a damage count and the start of new stages of the restoration of the heritage in the Temple and Convent of the Sagrado Salvador, in Malinalco; the Church of Santiago Apóstol, in Ocuilan de Arteaga and the Church of Cristo del Señor del Calvario, in the town of Santa María.

María Cristina García Cepeda talked to the sacristans and guardians of all the churches visited; she informed them about the stages of the work and invited them to continue collaborating in the restoration of their cultural heritage.
