Upfront, an exhibition presenting scenes of war and violence through photojournalism

November 04, 2017

The horrors of war, violence and migration, as well as the devastation caused by natural disasters, are presented through the lens of photojournalists in the exhibition Upfront.

Within the framework of the International Festival of Photography FotoMéxico 2017, the Centro Cultural España will host until February 18th, 2018, this collective exhibition that gathers the inquisitive gaze of 23 lens professionals.

The new global "disorder" and the wounds left in various parts of the world, from Afghanistan to Haiti, Syria, Congo, Libya and Central America, are reflected in the photographs presented, which capture today's harsh reality in images that are nevertheless esthetic.

Visitors will see the ravages of war, children playing in destroyed cities or attending school in bombed-out buildings, and the ruins of entire towns captured in panoramic views.

The plight of Afghan refugees, the violence provoked by maras in Honduras, sub-Saharan immigration and walls dividing territories such as Israelis, are part of the raw material presented in the photographs that make up Upfront.

There are 23 Hispanic photojournalists, most of them Spanish but also Argentine, Colombian and Peruvian, who share in this exhibition a total of 70 images witnessed by them.

The desperation to get help in Port-au-Prince, shocking images of Syrian army personnel, voodoo rituals in Haiti, protests in various countries around the world, wounded and dead, as well as survivors in the ruins of armed conflict, can be clearly seen in the disturbing photographs.

But in spite of everything, Upfront, which presents images of the war against war, shows that a little humanity remains in this troubled world, as in an image taken by Andoni Lubaki that shows an opponent of Al-Assad who gives food to a cat in the city of Aleppo that, according to UNESCO, has a high degree of destruction.

Upfront is also an exhibition with a particular museography, because the photographs, medium and large format, are hung throughout the place. The tour is marked on the floor and the description of the images is placed behind each one.

The exhibition, which presents the work of photographers such as Pep Bonet, Manu Bravo, Sergio Caro and Miguel Ángel Sánchez from Spain, as well as the Argentinean Natacha Pisarenko, the Peruvian Esteban Félix and the Colombian Ariana Cubillos, closes with the portraits of all the photojournalists and part of the instruments they use on a daily basis.

The exhibition Upfront, produced and financed by the Spanish Cooperation with the collaboration of the Centro Cultural Conde Duque de Madrid, will be on display in the Sala Donceles of the Centro Cultural España, located in Guatemala 18, Centro Histórico, until February 18th,2018.
