Los Cabos International Film Festival to pay tribute to American screenwriter and director Paul Schrader

A tribute to American screenwriter and director Paul Schrader, from whom two key movies will be screened: First Reformed and Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters which are part of Los Cabos International Film Festival programming

Details of the meeting were announced in a press conference held on Tuesday morning, October 31st in Sala 7 Alejandro Galindo of the Cineteca Nacional.

The attendees were: Alejandra Paulín, general coordinator of the festival; Maru Garzón Polanco, director of programming; Hugo Villa Smythe, general director of the festival; Jorge Sánchez Sosa, general director of the Mexican Film Institute (Imcine) and Lourdes Prieto, head of Cultural and Gastronomic Programming of the Mexican Tourism Promotion Council.

 Los Cabos International Film Festival is dedicated to presenting film proposals with powerful stories, inspiring characters and solid performances. It is the platform for directors and producers to continue to take their works to different places and make a contribution to the development of film culture worldwide.

The sixth edition of the festival will be held from November 8th to November 12th in Baja California Sur and will offer 41 titles (national and international) of which five are world premieres, three international premieres, eight premieres in Latin America and 20 premieres in Mexico.

These are movies that pose stories told in a clever and daring way, made by the great masters of cinema and young talents alike.

These movies are representative of 20 countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, France, Australia, Norway, Israel, Colombia, Finland, China, Japan, Germany, Hungary, Chile and Mexico.

The movies will be screened in different sections of the festival: Competencia Los Cabos, Galas, Mexico Primero, Special Presentations, Green, B-Side, World Highlights and American Specials.

 The following are the movies that stand out in Competencia Los Cabos: Camino a Marte by Humberto Hinojosa, La petite fille qui aimait trop les allumettes by Simon Lavoie, Luk’Luk`l by Wayne Wapeemukwa, The Florida Project by Sean Baker, A Ghost Story by David Lowery, Beach Rats by Eliza Hittman, Columbus by Kogonada, Golden Exits by Alex Ross Perry, and Mobile Homes by Vladimir de Fontenay

 In Mexico primero: A morir a los desiertos (To die to the deserts) by Marta Ferrer, Mis demonios nunca jugaron en soledad (My demons never played alone) by Jorge Leyva, Los días más oscuros de nosotros (The Darkest Days of Us) by Astrid Rondero, Opus Zero by Daniel Graham, and Ayer maravilla fui (Yesterday I was a wonder) by Gabriel Mariño

 In addition to the screenings at World Highlights: Angels Wear White by Vivian Qu, Blade of Immortal by Takashi Miike, Foxtrot by Samuel Maoz, On Body and Soul by Ildikó Enyedi, Thelma by Joachim Trier, Una mujer fantástica (A fantastic woman) by Sebastián Lelio, and Western by Valeska Grisebach.

Jorge Sánchez Sosa highlighted that Imcine will participate in the festival with seven titles: Camino a Marte, A morir a los desiertos, Los días más oscuros de nosotros, Mis diablos nunca jugaron soledad, Opus Zero, Bayoneta by Kyzza Terrazas, and Clases de Historia by Marcelino Islas Hernández.

The director added that the Imcine and the Canada Media Fund (an entity in charge of financing and promoting Canadian audiovisual production) will sign a memorandum of understanding.

 “The objective of this agreement is to jointly support the co-development of Mexican and Canadian series, preferably aimed at children and young people.”

Finally, Jorge Sánchez Sosa sais that through the FilminLatino platform, some of the winning movies from the festival's first edition will be shown, such as No, El Alcalde, Los insólitos peces gato, Güeros, Los Herederos, and Te prometo anarquía.

Among the activities that make up the festival's programming, it stands out the Masterclass From The Idea To Script which will be taught by the American writer, director and producer Eric Amadio.

A tribute will also be paid to the American scriptwriter and director Paul Schrader, from whom two key movies will be screened in his filmography.

The first is First Reformed, his most recent work (it will have its premiere in Latin America) in which he explores the disturbance of the human soul and Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters, which is a biography of Yukio Mishima, a novelist, essayist and playwright considered one of the greatest writers in the history of Japan.

In addition to Meet Mart, a space where during three days there is a meeting with more than 200 delegates of the industry at national and international level to promote networking among companies from Mexico, the United States, Canada and Europe.

In this venue, 330 events will be held, 13 film projects in development (Mexico-United States-Canada), four television projects in development, five work in progress and two industry talks.

Los Cabos International Film Festival will also host the Día Azul (Blue Day) on Friday, November 10 to raise awareness among the community about people with autism.

Among the activities that will take place on that day there is a special feature of the animated film El Ángel en el reloj by Miguel Ángel Uriegas and a silent auction of two sculptures designed by Mexican plastic artist Nacho Gallardo, El Nacho and made by children from the Red Autism Foundation.

The meeting will also include the participation of actors, directors, producers, scriptwriters and filmmakers (national and international), including: Jennifer Morrison, Trisha Ziff, Susan Rosenberg, Alex Sharp, Natalie Morales, Camila Sodi, Daniela de Jesús, Luis Gerardo Méndez, Livia Brito, Sebastián Zurita, Paulina Goto and Christopher Uckermann.
