Presentation of Casa Luis Buñuel to Mexico

October 03, 2017

Casa Luis Buñuel, located in the Del Valle quarter, was inhabited by the filmmaker from 1952, after becoming a naturalized mexican citizen in 1949. It was in this space where he conceived important projects such as the movie El ángel exterminador (The Exterminating Angel); he used to receive members of his team, as well as other personalities of the time like Silvia Pinal or María Félix.

Casa Luis Buñuel was handed over to Mexico on loan by the Government of Spain so that this building may become a space for the dissemination, promotion and teaching of cinematographic arts and sciences.

The building is now home of the Ibero-American Federation of Film Academies (FIACINE) and the Mexican Academy of Film Arts and Sciences (AMACC).

Luis Fernández-Cid de las Alas Pumariño, Ambassador of Spain in Mexico, handed the document of the bailment to Saúl Juárez Vega, Undersecretary of Cultural Development, representing the Secretary of Culture, María Cristina García Cepeda, who in turn gave it to Dolores Heredia, President of the AMACC.

Saúl Juárez pointed out that this house will come to life again with workshops, seminars, projections and activities that will benefit both filmmakers and people interested in the seventh art, all framed by the spirit and name of Luis Buñuel, whose legacy is a reference in the 20th century cinematography.

Ambassador Luis Fernández-Cid de las Alas Pumariño said that Luis Buñuel was a Spaniard Mexican and a Mexican Spaniard who addressed universality through his work and gave dimension to his ideas and creativity in this house, which will be a refuge for filmmakers who come together here to continue strengthening the great film tradition of Ibero-America.

“Precisely this impulse that we make together from the Ibero-American dimension to cinematography is to invest culturally in the creation of emotions, through a fundamental art for our lives. Cinema gives us a new way of thinking, it takes away sadness and unites us as a society”.

Dolores Heredia said that the Academy is proud to occupy this venue, whose delivery is now taking place after a two-year process in which the representation of the Spanish Government worked together with the Department of Culture and the Mexican Film Institute.

Finally, Jorge Sánchez, director of the Imcine, said that Mexico will have this new space, a magnificent house that, in memory of Luis Buñuel, also known as "San Luis", for the universality of his work, will become a venue to continue strengthening the cinema.
