In La Galería of the Cineteca National

Kubrick: The exhibition attracted over 160,000 viewers

July 31, 2017

A total of 161,826 visitors attended Stanley Kubrick: The exhibition, on display for 8 months at the Cineteca Nacional. The exhibition, a tour of the filmmaker’s legacy, an obsessive man able to cover all aspects of a movie from its conception to its premiere, ended successfully at La Galería.

In the last weekend and due to the influx of people, La Galería extended its schedule until midnight. From the early hours of Sunday, July 30th, the 150 tickets available per hour were sold out, which was reported through the official website of the Cineteca Nacional, social networks and signs posted at the entrances of the site, attached to the Federal Department of Culture.

Outside La Galería, Julián, a student of Communication Sciences, asked if someone had left a ticket, with the intention of buying it.

"I feel a little frustrated. The exhibition was on display for several months and I never gave myself time. A friend had recommended it to me. I have left it to the end. I’m not well acquainted with the director but we saw A clockwork orange at the university and I was curious to know a little more about him and his films ".

Stanley Kubrick: The exhibition opened its doors on December 1st, 2016, extended its exhibition period from May 29th to July 30th. By the end of April, it had already been seen by 100,000 people and a week before its closing registered 150,000 visitors.

The assembly was made up of 823 pieces: the original props of the movies, images, documents, photographic equipment and costumes that are distributed in 16 areas, allowing visitors to enter the creative universe and legacy of one of the most important filmmakers of the 20th century.

Other pieces included in the exhibition were scripts, storyboards, makeup tests and costumes, the director's original chair, his Oscar awarded by the Academy of Arts in 1969 for the special effects of 2001: A Space Odyssey, protest letters for the movie, Lolita, and his large collection of personal camera lenses that he used from his youth to his death.

The tour of the exhibition, which goes through his film work of three shorts and 13 feature films, started with his stage as a photographer for Look magazine and closes with the movie Eyes Wide Shut, including his unfinished projects, showing his obsessive side, perfectionist and demanding.

One of the differences of this exhibition to the ones presented at cities such as Amsterdam, Seoul, Paris, San Francisco and Los Angeles is that the rooms were set according to the movie.

With this proposal, young people and adults were in the XVIII century in the room dedicated to Barry Lyndon, they knew the inside of the Overlook hotel of the movie The Shining, and entered the spacecraft Discovery One of 2001: A Space Odyssey

The exhibition considered as wonderful, excellent, brilliant, outstanding and superb by the visitors, for Christian Molina was a fantastic and first-class exhibition, a must see for anyone who calls himself a cinephile who travels through the creator's filmography. "I found the distribution and space of the movies very good”, he said.

In Ruth Garcia's opinion, the exhibition was incredible. "It was very worth it to come. I loved the distribution of the rooms especially the ones of 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Shining and A clockwork Orange. It was a great opportunity to get to know Stanley Kubrick’s world, legacy and creative process.

"I think A Space Odyssey is the jewel of the exhibition. You hear the music you see the original costume, the apes’ outfit, the space baby, the masks and the helmet used by Dave Bowman”, she said.

For Karla Lemus the exhibited pieces were incredible and fascinating. "The assembly of the whole exhibition was perfect, I think that those who are Kubrick’s fans were amazed with the things they saw. It was a magnificent experience. I think it was well distributed and I could know more about his work”.

According to Álvaro, from Coacalco, State of Mexico, the exhibition was great and well designed. "They had more things than I imagined. It is very complete and illustrative, it’s an unforgettable experience for his fans. It was essential for those who enjoy his art to come and see it".

For Susana Medellín the exhibition was illustrative. "If you don’t know the filmmaker’s work, which is my case, you want to “mainline” his movies to become a fan. I think it pleases both fans and casual visitors”.

Adriana Morán, coming from Mexico City, agreed that the exhibition was enjoyed by both connoisseurs and non-connoisseurs of Stanley Kubrick’s work. "As a fan I really liked that they brought iconic accesories of his movies. I valued a lot to find objects such as the helmet of Full Metal jacket, the girls’ dresses of The Shining, accessories of A Space Odyssey or the original  records of Lolita. I loved Hal’s eye (A space Odyssey) "

Stanley Kubrick: The exhibition was shown at La Galería thanks to the efforts and collaboration between the Deutsches Filmmuseum Frankfurt am Main, Christiane Kubrick, Jan Harlan, The Stanley Kubrick Archive of the University of the Arts London and the Cineteca Nacional.
