Eight Oaxaca regions participate in La Guelaguetza 2017

Oaxaca, July 17th .- Representatives from the eight regions of Oaxaca participated on Monday in the traditional festival of La Guelaguetza, featuring traditional music and dances from the areas of La Cañada, La Costa, los Valles Centrales, el Itsmo, la Mixteca, el Papaloapán and the southern and northern mountains.

Musicians and dancers from each community paraded as part of the so-called Lunes del Cerro festivities in the auditorium Guelaguetza del Cerro del Fortín. Secretary of Culture, Maria Cristina García Cepeda, attented the event accompanied by the representation of the President of the Republic, Enrique Peña Nieto. Also, Governor Alejandro Murat Hinojosa was present.

Guelaguetza means “to share” or “to give” and represents the deepest sense of solidarity between the eight regions of Oaxaca. This year's festival will be attended by 32 delegations from different communities in the state, the same that will perform their traditional dances in the morning and evening editions of the first and second Lunes del Cerro.

The secretary of Culture celebrated that women and men of the Isthmus dance and sing a colorful mosaic full of traditions like each year in the Guelaguetza.

During the presentation at the Guelaguetza Auditorium, attendees were able to enjoy Las Chinas Oaxaqueñas, from Oaxaca de Juárez, with el Convite and Jarabe del Valle; the City of Tlaxiaco, with Sones y Jarabes from Tlaxiaco; San Felipe Usila with el Jarabe Usileño; Santa María Tlahuitoltepec, with Sones y Jarabes Mixes and Huautla de Jiménez, with Sones Mazatecos.

Also, the delegations that participated are: Santiago Juxtlahuaca, with la Danza de los Rubios; Santiago Niltepec, Patron Saint Festivals honoring Santiago Apóstol; Villa de Zaachila, with la Danza de la Pluma; Santiago Pochutla, with the Sones de Pochutla; San Juan Bautista Tuxtepec, with Flor de Piña; Villa de Mitla, with Boda Mitleña; Ejutla de Crespo, with Jarabe Ejuteco; Santiago Macuiltianguis, with Torito Serrano, Putla Villa de Guerrero, with Sones y Chilenas de Carnaval.

Governor Alejandro Murat Hinojosa celebrated that Oaxaca’s traditional wealth is expressed through this great festival of tradition and identity, which explains the way communities keep their traditions through the centuries.

During the morning, he highlighted the dance of la delegación del Itsmo with the dancers who in floral costumes and gold ornaments performed their traditional dance carrying on their heads the traditional basket with flowers.

Los Rubios dance was also celebrated by the delegation from Santiago Juxtlahuaca, where participants dressed in costumes and deerskin hats dance a tradition that goes back to the old cattle hauling from the Oaxacan coast to the Parián.

Among the dancers who closed the presentation, El Torito Serrano, from the community of San Pablo Macuiltianguis, was very much applauded. It’s a dance that dates back to colonial times and was formerly performed during the funeral of a child, however it was over time incorporated into religious festivities and traditional festivals.
