Until September

Marcela Lobo takes her past, present and future to Austria with Reading the past

July 07, 2017

Marcela Lobo’s personal universe, which has been expressed in a series of object-art boxes, is already in the city of Vienna, Austria, where the exhibition Reading the past is presented through objects that belonged to others.

This exhibition, which was on display in 2015 at the National Arts Center (Cenart, for its acronym in Spanish) and which during 2016 was first in Paris and then in Warsaw, has now arrived in Vienna where it will be open to the public until September at the Institute of Mexico in Austria.

Reading the past was opened on June 26th and is made up of 31 object-art boxes that have caused much expectation among people who wonder what they are, said the visual artist.

"And at the time they came in and saw that every box told a story, they died of laughter and everyone said to me that this box was perfect for them, this story is mine or I also played with these old objects as a child, everyone identified with some object or with some box or with some story".

Marcela Lobo said in an interview with the Department of Culture that Reading the past is a very personal exhibition. "It really speaks of me and it is divided into several themes like: Lost Innocence, I married three times, The family, I was born, I grew up and I have not disappeared, deal with my past, my present, where we are going and the future”.

However, she reminded that these are old objects that, as the title says, belonged to other people, since Marcela Lobo lost all her things after the hurricane Gilberto in Cancun and thereafter she needed to recover her past”.

"I found this way of telling my story, my childhood vacations, when I used to go to the opera at Fine Arts, my memories… I gathered them in these boxes with objects that belonged to other people and now these objects have another story, other emotional burden and I applied them to my life ".

So, she goes to the old markets where she looks for what she needs and even it has taken her six or seven months to find a specific object that she wants to put in some of her boxes, so it’s fun work, she said.

The 42 boxes that make up Reading the past through objects that belonged to others, only 31 traveled to Vienna and in the different cities where the exhibition has been presented, the artist was surprised by "the number of people who go and how everyone is delighted, which is very satisfying”.

While a part of her work is in Austria, Marcela Lobo continues working in Mexico in all the disciplines she devotes herself, sometimes painting, sometimes making boxes and also in photography having already an exhibition to be presented in October at the Biblioteca Vasconcelos.

She will exhibit a series of images she took in Iceland. "They are wonderful landscapes, something completely different from my colors and my boxes, because these photos are of such a peace that also reflect what I live. I am a person who lives very in peace, very in balance and I think that is going to be a change for the people, like saying this is Marcela Lobo with these photos ", she said.

Also, she will be showing a series of colorful still lifes in Italy. Meanwhile, the European public will be able to enjoy Marcela Lobo’s boxes during the summer until September at the Institute of Mexico, then Reading the past will travel to Madrid.
