Presentation of the call for Olivia Gorra International Singing Competition

June 21, 2017

With the aim of spreading and contributing to the legacy of traditional music, concert and fine Mexican song, singers, children, young people, adults and seniors, Mexicans and foreigners with or without professional preparation, are invited to participate in the third edition of the Olivia Gorra International Singing Competition.

The call of the contest which motto is The legacy of Mexican music is in your voice opened last Friday June 16th, and will close on July 31st of this year, soprano Olivia Gorra said at a press conference.

The contest, which will again take place at the National Center for the Arts (Cenart, for its acronym in Spanish), has as innovations free workshops of philosophy, music therapy, and history of Mexican music, for participants who qualify for the semifinal.

As well as a couple of concerts: one with the three of the winning counter tenors 2015 and 2016 editions; and another consisting of the presentation of the winners of the Academy competition, in Perm, Russia, in the category Stars of Madame Olivia Gorra, on Wednesday August 30th. Both recitals at the Auditorio Blas Galindo.

"I invite the people to participate in order to carry out this rescue of Mexican music, which must be known. I think singing will be a bit easier,” said Olivia Gorra.

The singer with 30 years of artistic trajectory indicated that in this edition the list of composers will be of 100 and the available pieces will be of simpler characteristics, as the competitors are children and young people.

"There will be songs for everyone, for the studious and for those who are just beginning in singing, for children, adults, people who like the music of the past. We are considering authors from the Viceroyalty and contemporaries, the youngest of 1951”.

Five are the categories that make up the call: Adults aged 18 to 35, Adults aged 36 to 59, Children aged 8 to 11 and Young people aged 12 to 17, Adult over 60 onwards and Mexican Counter tenor aged 18 to 40.

Olivia Gorra said that rather than being a singing competition, the aim is that participants  strengthen their sense of belonging to Mexican music consolidating their love for this legacy. “The passion of Mexican music is rated in this competition.”

The vernacular singer Alberto Angel The Crow who will be part of the jury, said he was honored to collaborate in the competition, which, he said, goes beyond finding new voices.

"Traditional Mexican music is not limited only to singing but to the search and meeting with nationalist identity. It is a genre of great importance, it has certain requirements that make it remain in an equal situation, in terms of the operatic requirements. It implies a large vocal and interpretive preparation”.

Finally, the winner of the first edition of the competition, Ana Rosalía Ramos, highlighted the contest as only one of its kind in the country. "It brings participants closer to traditional Mexican music. It is not an awards competition for a vocal technique”.

According to the call, all participants in the Olivia Gorra Singing Competition have as an indispensable requirement to play music composed by Mexican authors. Therefore they must choose and prepare their repertoire from the initial lists of composers and pieces available in the Competition section of the website www.oliviagorra.com.

There is a registration fee of $ 500.00 pesos. The semi-final will be held on Friday, September 1st, behind closed doors in front of the jury chosen by the Organizing Committee.

The final will be on Saturday, September 2nd, at 9:00 am, in the Auditorio Blas Galindo of the Cenart, with open access to all the public over 8 years.

There are prizes for first, second and third place for the categories: Adults aged 18 to 35, Adults aged 36 to 59, Children aged 8 to 11 and Young people aged 12 to 17.
