Mexico and Spain strengthen bilateral cultural relations with agreements in various fields

April 20, 2017

The protection and broadcasting of the Underwater Cultural Heritage; the consolidation of the Ibero-American Cultural Space through linguistic work; the inscription of the Nau of China or Galleon of Manila in the program Memory of the World of UNESCO; the exchange between master craftsmen of Spain and Mexico to strengthen the creative industries and the protection of copyright in digital, are some of the agreements established during the Secretary of Culture, Maria Cristina García Cepeda’s visit to Spain, as part of the work of the Subcommittee on Educational, Cultural, Technical and Scientific Cooperation in that country.

The meeting was attended by the Secretary of Foreign Affairs of Mexico, Luis Videgaray Caso; Fernando García Casas, Secretary of State for International Cooperation and Latin America, and Alfonso María Dastis Quecedo, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of the Government of Spain.

The Secretary of Culture celebrated the Mobility Program with the exchange of 58 Mexican and 38 Spanish institutions, thanks to the National Association of Universities and Institutions of Higher Education and the Conference of Rectors of Spanish Universities, an initiative that will be strengthened with the cooperation of the National Autonomous University of Mexico, the Instituto Cervantes and the University of Salamanca, with which the International System of Evaluation of the Spanish Language (SIELE, for its acronym in Spanish) will be consolidated.

The Mexican delegation visited the future Casa de México in Spain, defined as a platform for cultural, economic, tourism and gastronomic exchange between both nations.

María Cristina García Cepeda appreciated the generosity of the Government of Spain, making Casa Buñuel the headquarters of the Ibero-American Federation of Film Academies and the Mexican Film Academy. The Secretary of Culture of Mexico signed with the Minister of Education, Culture and Sport of Spain, Íñigo Méndez de Vigo, the agreement with which Casa Buñuel will work in Mexico.

"It’s the home where Luis Buñuel lived, imagined and created his very personal universe, a Spanish and Mexican contribution to universal cinema. This house will now be a space of investigation, promotion and broadcasting of the talent of filmmakers across the world”.

She also reminded that this year, Mexico will receive the Letters from Spain as the Guest Country to the International Children and Youth Book Fair, and Madrid will be the City invited to the Guadalajara International Book Fair, two of the most important book and reading fairs of the Spanish language.

"With four decades of re-establishing our relationships, this anniversary is a good way to remember shared roots and reflect on the future. Culture is the clearest and most fruitful dialogue that can exist between nations, and Mexico and Spain become bigger with closeness”, the secretary of Culture added.
