Mexico and Spain celebrate 40 years of restoration of their diplomatic relations

The Casa Buñuel is the HQ of the Ibero-American Federation of Film Academies and the Mexican Film Academy

Within the framework of the 15th anniversary of the Centro Cultural España, it was announced that Casa Buñuel, located in the Del Valle neighborhood of Mexico City, is already the headquarters of the Ibero-American Federation of Film Academies.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Spain, Alfonso Dastis Quecedo, before the Secretary of Culture of the Government of the Republic, Maria Cristina García Cepeda and the Spanish Ambassador to Mexico, Luis Fernández-Cid de las Alas Pumariño, during the event where the book CDMX-CCEM 2002-2017 A story of success, was also presented.

"We celebrate the Casa Buñuel is the headquarters of this federation", Secretary of Culture said and recognized the Spanish government and Minister Dastis for a so relevant decision to the film industry of our countries.

Dolores Heredia, president of Mexican Film Academy (AMACC, for its acronym in Spanish) sent a greeting expressing her appreciation for the sensitivity and support of the Secretary of Culture, María Cristina García Cepeda; director of IMCINE, Jorge Sánchez and the Spanish authorities that made this donation possible.

Secretary of Culture said that the presence of the Centro Cultural España in the heart of the Historic Center of Mexico is a shared embrace that strengthens the relationship between both countries and celebrated this 15th anniversary takes place within the framework of 40 years of the reestablishment of diplomatic relations between the two nations.

CDMX-CCEMX 2002-2017 A story of success is an example of the role of this building in the promotion and cultural management, as well as in the design of new ways of institutional cooperation with Mexico. It is a tour of the activities of this center, which is part of the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation for Development and is distinguished by its multidisciplinary platform of diffusion, with workshops, exhibitions, artistic activities and a film club.

María Cristina García Cepeda said that it is a great honor for the Department of Culture to be part of this project and recalled that in the Centro Cultural España, the National Institute of Anthropology and History designates a space with the vestiges that belonged to Calmécac, one of the schools of the ancient Tenochtitlan.

She added that the book CDMX-CCEMX 2002-2017 A story of success, offers a unique perspective on the process of restoration and the trajectory to convert a patrimonial and emblematic space of our city into a living center open to the expressions of culture, which especially welcomes a young audience. "The story of success this publication tells us is that of the beneficiaries of culture”.

Alfonso María Dastis Quecedo said that the success of the Centro Cultural España reflects some of the most important projects developed between Spain and Mexico, for 15 years, with an exchange where art, culture and imagination are present, all vital substrates for relations between both peoples.

"During recent years, we have seen how Mexican art has been a factor of attraction for Spain and the world, as well as the consolidation of a Mexican cultural market flanked by the Guadalajara Book Fair, the International Cervantino Festival and the Guadalajara and Morelia Film Festivals”.

The Spanish Ambassador to Mexico, Luis Fernández-Cid de las Alas Pumariño, considered that this book explains the integrative philosophy that the Centro Cultural España has followed, through the years as an example of the good bilateral relationship between two brother countries who show how their expressions and their diverse cultures find confluences to build a common future
