March 02, 2017

With the opening of the photographic exhibition Unidos por el jazz (United by jazz) and the musical performances of the Spaniards Sumrrá and the Germans Sebastian Gramss Bassmasse, the 20th Eurojazz Festival will start on March 3rd.

Musicians and groups from Spain, Germany, Austria, Portugal, Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, Finland, Italy, Belgium, France and the Slovak Republic will be participating in the event that the National Art Center (CENART, for its acronym in Spanish) hosts since 1998.

"We are proud and happy to reach the twentieth edition of one of the most emblematic festivals taken place at the Cenart. This year 12 European groups will participate offering a very eclectic show, full of influences”, director of Cenart Ricardo Calderón said

The official described the Eurojazz Festival as a permanently open window to European jazz groups. “It is one of the most awaited activities by lovers of the syncopated genre in Mexico City, which it has strengthened in a very strong way among the public”, he said.

Calderón stressed three elements for this edition: the assembly of the exhibition Unidos por el jazz, the teaching of master classes and the presence of the Slovak Republic for the first time.

“The vigorous participation of the public that attends and the dedication of the groups that have been part of this festival during 19 editions, will be addressed in the photographic exhibition Unidos por el jazz, which is made up of 21 large format reproductions of culminating and interesting moments of the festival that the public will enjoy ", the cultural promoter explained.

This year, Slovakian Erik Rothenstein Band will play for the first time at Eurojazz . The reason, according to Calderón, is the impact of this jazz event notorious in Europe. "The people, the musicians, the jazz professionals of that continent knows about this festival, which is the most important dedicated to the European jazz in all Latin America".

Three master classes aimed at musicians and students interested in sharing knowledge with the invited groups will be also part of the Festival.

"Some years ago we started the program of activities with the participating groups. Some are asked to provide an academic level such as lectures, workshops, auditions and tips in order to share experiences with guests”.

"This type of event leaves a mark on our student community, because the School of Music members are invited mainly, but we also open ourselves to the Conservatory, to people interested in performing jazz, and the ways that are developing in European jazz. The lectures, in particular, have been enormously successful”, he said.

The concerts of the Eurojazz 2017 Festival will begin on Friday March 3rd with the presentation of two proposals: the Spanish trio Sumrrá, considered one of the new references of contemporary jazz, and the German group Sebastian Gramss Bassmasse.

Presentations will follow on Saturday March 4th with the Erik Rothenstein Band (Slovak Republic). On Sunday, March 5th will be the turn of the group Shake Stew (Austria) and Sofia Ribeiro, one of the most versatile voices in Portugal.

On Saturday 11th, Bláha-Lapčíková Duo (Czech Republic) and Stryjo Trio (Poland) will be presented. On Sunday 12th, Krisztián Oláh Kvartett (Hungary) will show his modern jazz and the Finnish ensemble Lauri Porra Flyover will appear on stage, directed by Lauri Porra, great-grandson of Jean Sibelius and recognized as the bass player of the band Stratovarius.

The Italian duet Actis Dato-Rocco will play on Saturday March 18th, concluding the Eurojazz Festival on Sunday, March 19th with the presence of Igor Gehenot Quartet (Belgium) and the performance of the French singer Mina Agossi.

Throughout 19 editions, 21 countries have participated in the Eurojazz Festival: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Spain, Finland, France, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, United Kingdom, Czech Republic , Slovak Republic, Sweden, as well as Andorra, Switzerland and Turkey, which are not part of the European Union.

Over 680 musicians, members of 180 groups have attended the festival which has gathered almost 728,000 people throughout 122 concerts.

The festival has grown in 19 years and has surpassed itself. It is not only hosted at the National Arts Center, since the previous year we have taken several of these groups by other states. On 2017 we are going to take some groups to states that are also participating, like San Luis Potosí, Hidalgo, and the north of the country ", Ricardo Calderón said.

The Eurojazz 2017 Festival will be held from March 3rd to 19th in the green areas of the National Arts Center, located in Río Churubusco 79, esquina Calzada de Tlalpan. Free entry.
