"A streetcar named desire" will come to Teatro Helénico

February 17, 2017

After 21 years without staging the play in Mexico City, the directors Iona Weissberg and Aline de la Cruz are betting to direct a classic from a feminine and contemporary perspective.

Then, the most represented play of the American dramaturgy, Tennessee Williams’s A streetcar named desire will arrive to Centro Cultural Helénico with a Mexican production from March 3rd.

"A streetcar named desire is much more perverse and less poetic than it usually is. We see in the play a husband who beats his wife and she stands it, a lady who goes to bed with one of her students; alcoholic people. It is a very degraded world that generally presents itself from a more lyrical perspective. What we are trying to do is how this looks at the beginning of the 21st century” Iona Weissberg, said.

Although the time in which the plot takes place (the mid-forties of the last century) and the costume and stage design are patent, the type of situations presented has become social problems that affect society today, Aline de la Cruz said.

"There is a part of us in which these perversions resound in the collective consciousness. I think that's why the play is still in force, although it strikes us differently. "

Monica Dionne performs Blanche Dubois, Marcus Ornellas represents Stanley Kowalski, Maria Aura plays Stella Dubois and Rodrigo Murray performs Harold Mitchell. The cast is completed by:  Héctor Sandoval, Daniela Rodríguez, Luis Montalvo, Omar Saavedra, Angélica May and Rebeca Roa.

In the story, Blanche, a mature woman anchored in the past, visits her sister Stella and her husband Stanley, a rustic and violent young man of Polish ancestry who lives in New Orleans. Blanche decides to stay for an indefinite period of time to live with her sister. At this moment, Blanche tells her about the loss of an old family property called Belle Reeve. This raises suspicions in Stella's husband, who decides to investigate more about Blanche's rough past.

Monica Dionne said that playing Blanche Dubois is a fantasy for every actress because of the challenge of this character who has exalted emotions. Hence the importance of proposing an acting style that portrays an affected and histrionic person, but taking care of the details in order not to be so overreacted.

According to the actor Rodrigo Murray, we must remove that air of seriousness and solemnity that surrounds the play, so he hopes it can call young people who have not had the opportunity to see it.

A streetcar called desire will be presented from March 3rd to April 30th at the Teatro Helénico of the Hellenic Cultural Center, located at Av. Revolución no. 1500, col. Guadalupe Inn. Performances: Friday at 8:30 p.m., Saturdays at 6 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., and Sundays at 6 p.m. Tickets: $ 450.
