The fourteenth Zona Maco edition, Mexico Contemporary Art, will take place from February 8th to 12th, bringing together 150 exhibitors and 120 galleries. Once again, the event aims to promote the circulation of contemporary art and collecting in Mexico.

Traditionally, the founder of Zona Maco, Zélika García, highlighted that this fair will be held at Centro Banamex and according to its artistic director, Daniel Garza Usabiaga, will have the usual sections: General, Design, Zona Maco Sur, New Proposals and Modern Art.

In a press conference, she explained that there will be 70 galleries that will be present in the section General and 22 in the New Proposals. Zona Maco Sur will exhibit 22 individual projects by artists and the section Modern Art breaks the record this year with the participation of 17 galleries.

For the first time, the section New Proposals will have an exhibition space that will house a traditional exhibition curated by Humerto Moro, with over 20 young artists ‘ work from different galleries.

This time, the Department of Culture, through the National Institute of Fine Arts (INBA, for its acronym in Spanish), returns to Zona Maco to present some of the most outstanding examples of contemporary works that have been part of its cultural heritage in recent years.

New pieces in the INBA collection will stand out the work that has been carried out in its venues whose vocation is the diffusion of contemporary art: the Tamayo Contemporary Art Museum, the Carrillo Gil Art Museum, the Siqueiros Public Art Room, Ex Teresa Arte Actual and the Laboratorio Arte Alameda.

On the other hand, Zona Maco 2017 together with the government of Mexico City will bring to our country the New Yorker artist Lawrence Weiner, iconic figure of conceptual art.

In addition to an exhibition at the Museum of Mexico City, the artist will carry out various interventions combining word and light in different public spaces, such as the Zócalo and the building of the Department of Public Education.

The sponsors of Zona Maco are ready to give their prizes and to collaborate in order to consolidate the art market and support young artists by acquiring their pieces.

Daniel Garza Usabiaga pointed out that the young art, the section New Proposals and the exhibition area have been reinforced, which reflects the interest and commitment of the fair to support the new creators and give visibility to their work.

In addition to the large presence of exhibitors and galleries, this year the gathering has prepared an extensive program of conferences with guests of international stature to encourage reflection on contemporary art new proposals. Traditionally, a wide gastronomic offer will be presented too.
