November 10, 2016

For the third consecutive year, the National Dance Company will perform at the Palace of Fine Arts A Midsummer Night’s Dream ballet, based on William Shakespeare’s comedy, 400 years after his death, with choreography by James Kelly and music by Felix Mendelssohn.

This choreographic version, which includes 50 dancers on stage who are taken to the extreme, will offer five performances on November 19th, 20th, 24th and 27th and in three of them will have the participation of the Orchestra and Choir of the Theater of Fine arts.

At a press conference, James Kelly indicated that doing this choreographic version to translate the story to dance implied a very strong challenge and decided to push the dancers to the limit, through movements sometimes fast, in other dangerous, to exceed the limits of the ballet.

He pointed out that his work is dedicated to the people of today, from Mexico of the XXI century, because he did not want to locate this comedy in a specific time, but it is timeless, so the scenery and costumes are not of Elizabethan style.

Jacqueline López, director of the National Dance Company, said that in this version of A midsummer night’s dream, James Kelly addresses classical dance to the extreme, with very difficult lifts, as well as turns, pirouettes and jumps that give a lot of action to the work.

Natasha Lagunas, also from the National Dance Company, said that this institution joins the commemoration of the 400 years of William Shakespeare’s death and adorns itself again when presenting this complex story, but with Kelly’s choreography keeps its fun touch and is clear to understand the plots.

A Midsummer Night's Dream develops between the world of mortals and the world of fairies, from the intrigues and bewilderments that the protagonists live when they are hopelessly in love with the wrong person.

Blanca Ríos and Argenis Montalvo, the first dancers of the NDC, described being excited to participate in this dynamic ballet, which is one of the most recent productions of the company.

The A Midsummer Night's Dream performances will be on Saturday, November 19th, at 1:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.; on Sunday 20th, at 5:00 p.m.; On Thursday 24th at 8:00 p.m., and on Sunday 27th at 5:00 p.m., at the Palace of Fine Arts.

On Sundays 20th and 27th, as well as on Thursday 24th, the Orchestra and the Choir of the Fine Arts Theater will participate. The prices of the performances with live music range from 150 to 500 pesos, while without orchestra they oscillate between 100 and 300 pesos.
