On the centenary of the Easter Rising
The Irish in Latin America, a traveling exhibition that will start its journey in the Library of Mexico·
October 15, 20162016 is a particularly special year for Ireland and the Irish diaspora around the world. One hundred years ago, the Easter Rising took place in Dublin. This rebellion, was the first step towards the independence of Ireland, achieved in 1922.
As part of the commemoration of this centenary, the Embassy of Ireland in Mexico, in collaboration with the Secretary of Culture, through the Department of Libraries and the Library of Mexico, will open the exhibition, which will take place in the Jardín de los Aromas of the Library of Mexico on Tuesday, October 18th, at 7:00 pm, led by Sonja Hyland, Ambassador of Ireland in Mexico and Jorge von Ziegler, general director of Libraries of the Department of Culture. The traveling exhibition is a journey through time that presents for the first time in the world a graphic display about the participation of the Irish in the revolutionary and independence movements, as well as their contributions in the economic, political, social and cultural fields in Mexico , Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay, Argentina, Chile and Cuba, among other countries, where the Irish migrants not only forged their own identity but also left a legacy for posterity.
The Irish in Latin America will be on view from October 18th to November 18th, 2016, and starting in 2017 will begin a tour through several states of the Republic and other countries of Latin America, presenting itself in museums, schools, universities and cultural venues.
The exhibition reminds that migrants are not a source of insecurity or threat, but represent a source of new ideas, cultural richness and economic prosperity that create unbreakable links between peoples.
