The exhibition Mexico from 1900 to 1950. Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo, Jose Clemente Orozco and vanguards allows the French public make a re-reading of Mexican art of the twentieth century, Secretary of Culture Rafael Tovar y de Teresa said in an interview.

The great display opened on Tuesday October 4th at the Grand Palais in Paris, Francia, is made up of 203 works from 20 major national collections, 10 international and 31 individuals, and exhibited at the Grand Palais as a sign of cultural exchange and artistic reciprocity that both countries have maintained through the centuries.  Rafael Tovar y de Teresa said that when we talk about Mexican art we do it as a part of a series of ideas about the Mexican Revolution, what is right, but as a precedent of Diego Rivera, Jose Clemente Orozco and David Alfaro Siqueiros there were prominent artists who at the beginning of the twentieth century began to contribute to the rescue of the indigenous past, such as the painter Saturnino Herrán.

In addition to the above mentioned artists, the exhibition also presents works from strong and prominent female figures, who are part of the history of the twentieth century art, such as Frida Kahlo whose presentation of The Two Fridas and other pieces that had not been exhibited in France before, he said.

"I think that this exhibition will allow the French public, which is one of the closest to the knowledge of Mexican art, to have elements for a new evaluation. I think that this is the heart of the exhibition, to give a renovation to the way that our art is appreciated, that it was not only art for Mexico and Mexicans but a part of the international vanguards in the thirties that for political reasons it was part of a language that was not the right at the time of McCarthyism, then the interest falled off in the United States. It maintained in Europe but in Mexico it was associated to an official speech of national culture. I think these are the issues to be discussed and are part of the life of the country”, the head of Culture said.

 Mexico 1900-1950.
