The art of clothing from Guizhou, China, arrives at the National Museum of Cultures

The exhibition The Memory of Hands. Splendor and colorful heritage of Guizhou   made up of over 100 pieces, including costumes, embroidery, jewelry, baby carriers, masks and trimmed paper, will be on view from September 28th until the end of January 2017 at the National Museum of Cultures.

 With pieces from the Splendorous Art Museum of Guizhou and curated by Silvia Seligson, this is a small example of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of the province that concentrates 17 of the 55 ethnic minorities in China.

Organized by the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH, for its acronym in Spanish) of the Secretary of Culture, the exhibition is part of the celebrations of the China-Latin America and Caribbean Cultural Exchange Year.

The exhibition is divided into five pillars and shows typical clothing of the region, both feast and everyday use, baby carriers, embroidery examples, batik pieces, traditional wax engraving  technique and masks used in regional operas.

 Researcher Silvia Seligson noted that attendees can see some unique pieces that are already difficult to get and the exhibition welcomes visitors with a woman suit exclusively for feasts and weddings, with an impressive silver jewelry, which weighs up 18 kilos and is characteristic of the Miao minority.

 Meanwhile, LI Shengxiang, deputy director of the Department of Culture of Guizhou Province, said that "coming to Mexico and showing to strengthen cooperative relationships with Mexican friends is very important."

 The opening to be held on September 28th will include presentations of balls, dances and music of Guizhou, trimmed paper examples and other traditional techniques and in subsequent days there will be talks with Chinese specialists about the folklore of that province and the work of protection of China’s intangible culture.

 The Memory of Hands "is a small example of what we are, of our cultural heritage", the Chinese official said, which the public can come and learn more about the ancient country.

The exhibition shows a hand loom, extraordinary embroidery examples with over 20 different types of stitches, a variety of baby carriers, that according to the activity of the mother, can be used in front and back, as well as batik pieces dyed in indigo blue hot wax.

 The exhibition closes with an embroidered men suit that is used by who has the highest position in a celebration that is held every 13 years and papel picado examples with elaborated red and black landscapes.

 The Memory of Hands. Splendor and colorful heritage of Guizhou will be opened on September 28th at 19:00 in the Sala Internacional of the National Museum of Cultures and at 20:30 Guizhou’s  songs and dances  will be presented in the Sala Polivalente.

The exhibition of this traditional Chinese art, on view until the end of January 2017, can be visited at Moneda , 13, Historic center of Mexico City. Tuesday  to Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00 hours. Free admission.
