Mexico, guest of honor at the Marché de la Poésie in France

On Wednesday June 8th started the unmissable event of letters in France, the Marché de la Poésie (Poetry Market), a unique gathering of its kind with poetry as protagonist and Mexico as guest of honor. The Marché de la Poésie takes place in an exceptional location, the Place Saint-Sulpice, in the heart of the Latin Quarter and close to the Sorbonne University.
The current edition, an international showcase of creation and publication of poetry, has the presence of 550 publishers, in addition to great writers and poetry lovers, who will meet, as every year, around readings, book signings, round tables and debates. Mexican authors’ creation will have a prominent place in the event.
Mexico’s representative delegation has prepared a comprehensive program of roundtables and conferences, plus a stand with about 500 works by Mexican authors translated into French.
"We bring the works of big publishers, but also of small ones that go against the flow of the market and only want to publish poetry. What we offer was done with the intention of bringing the highest representation of what is being written and published in the country, so that the works of renowned poets are known, but also the young poets’ and emerging creations”, Alejandro Merlín, representative of the General Directorate of Publications of the Department of Culture of Mexico pointed out.
“We wanted to have a selection of different generations and, above all, to take advantage of this event in order to spread the work of both young poets, as consecrated, that have already been translated into French”, Alejandro Merlin added.
In this 34th edition of le Marché de la Poésie the presence of emerging works of the best of contemporary poetry in Mexico was favored and the delegation proposed for this edition -where women will be particularly present-, is representative of the richness and plurality of the national creation.
Mexico is represented by Jorge Esquinca (1957), Luis Felipe Fabre (1974), Julian Herbert (1971), Oscar de Pablo (1979), Paula Abramo (1980) translator and author of the poetry collection Fiat Lux, Coral Bracho (1951); Silvia Eugenia Castillero (1963) whose anthologies have been translated into French by Claude Couffon and François-Michel Durazzo and finally Karen Villeda (1985) who has published books for children, Cuadrado de cabeza (Edebé 2015) and four books of poetry, and whose digital work appears in the third volume of the Electronic Literature Collection of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
While the official inauguration took place on Wednesday June 8th with the Ambassador of Mexico in France, Juan Manuel Gomez-Robledo, who was accompanied by Yves Boudier, president of the Marché de la Poésie, and had Belgian poet Werner Lambersy’s intervention, the agenda of meetings and readings started from Monday June 6th at two main locations: the House of Latin America and the Cultural Institute of Mexico, and will continue throughout the month.
During the opening day, Octavio Paz’s speech was read on the occasion of the acceptance of the Nobel Prize for Literature (December 1990), so that later the Ambassador of Mexico in France, Juan Manuel Gomez-Robledo, made the official declaration of the opening of the gathering.
This week's program includes the discussion of Mexican culture and poetry, through readings by different authors to be held in both Spanish and French.
There will also be meetings that will take the form of debates and round tables between the Mexican delegation and prominent figures in the literary scene in France as Annie Le Brun, Benjamin Lazar, Patrick Quillier, Philippe Burin des Roziers, Sophie Lucarotti, Serge Pey and Jean Portante, among others.
Some of the writers will present their latest publications like Luis Felipe Fabre, who will make a bilingual reading of his work Sodomy in the New Spain, with the participation of Annie Le Brun and Benjamin Lazar. On the other hand, Mexican writers will participate in a meeting dedicated only to the role of women in literary creation in the colloquium Poetry: female genre.
Two Mexican anthologies translated into French will be presented: Avec du Soleil Sous la Semelle, Onze Poètes Mexicains d’Aujourd’hui (Editions Caractères) and Mexico 20, la Nouvelle Poésie Mexicaine (Le Castor Astral).
"The anthology of Mexico 20, the new Mexican poetry was carried out at the request of the General Directorate of Publications of the Department of Culture, which mission is to promote the new generation of Mexican writers", Ambassador Juan Manuel Gomez-Robledo said at the opening . "Thus, the jury with three renowned authors- Jorge Esquinca, Tedi Lopez Mills and Myriam Moscona-, selected the most representative works of 20 writers of the new generation of Mexican poets of the 21st century”, he added
