May 28, 2016

The Anish Kapoor’s sculptural work (Bombay, India, 1954) made between 1980 and 2016 is represented by 22 large pieces in the exhibition Archaeology: Biology, opened on May 27th at the University Museum of Contemporary Art (MUAC, for its acronym in Spanish) of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM, for its acronym in Spanish), an event attended by the Secretary of Culture, Rafael Tovar y de Teresa

During the inauguration of the exhibition, by the UNAM rector, Enrique Graue, the Secretary of Culture, Rafael Tovar y de Teresa, considered that Anish Kapoor is one of the key figures of contemporary creation who undoubtedly has taught to see the world differently because a part of the contemporary imagination is under his name and signature.

He also considered that with his work, which is present in the world’s most important contemporary museums, Kapoor helps to understand the art of our time, so this display is a cause for happiness and a door for the Mexican public to approach the work of a unique creator, who in 2011 received the Imperial Prize of Japan, together with the Mexican architect Ricardo Legorreta.

He also pointed out that the area of MUAC, an architectural work of Teodoro González de León, who this month celebrates his 90th birthday and has been honored by the Department of Culture, gives splendor to Anish Kapoor’s pieces, as his production enhances the campus.

This is the first time Anish Kapoor presents his sculptural work in Latin America, which assembly for its exhibition at the MUAC was supervised by himself, which means that 560 tons of art integrated in 22 pieces describe the different stages through which his work has passed, and the most recent is shown for the first time to the national and international public.

The display is produced by the MUAC, the UNAM and the Contemporary Art Fund Board A.C., and is consisted of four pillars: Self-generated Forms, Beauty Forms, Time and Unpredictable Forces.

The first theme is consisted of the pieces: To Reflect an Intimate Part of the Red, (1981), and 1000 Names series (1979-1980), where the pieces seem to emerge from the soil as hidden "icebergs" which project into space.

In Beauty Forms we can see When I am Pregnant (1992), and C-Curve (2007), and Time shows the dome At the Edge of the World II (1998).

 The following works were placed in Unpredictable Forces: 1) My Red Homeland (2003); 2) Archaeology and Biology (2007); 3) Void (1989); 4) Mother, Mother (2016); 5) 3 Days ... (2016); 6) Tongue Memory (2016), and 7) Place Under (2015).

The works of this exhibition, curated by Catherine Lampert, traveled from Southampton, UK, in three ships with 20 containers.

The MUAC is added to those places where Anish Kapoor has exhibited individually, as the Palace of Versailles (France); the Martin Gropius Bau, (Germany); the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney, (Australia), the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi, (India), the Guggenheim, Bilbao, (Spain), the Royal Academy of Arts and the Tate Modern (London).
