May 16, 2016

Cannes, May 16th.-The new event of the European Film Market (EFM), Country in Focus, is conceived to give the film industry and filmmakers the opportunity to present themselves in depth and highlight certain aspects of their national cinema.

It has the support of the Department of Culture of the Federal Government, the Mexican Film Institute (IMCINE, for its contraction in Spanish), with the collaboration of Manuel António da Mota Foundation, which accepted this initiative in order that the Mexican film industry is present during the European Film Market 2017 which is part of the Berlinale.

The occasion will be useful to publicize financing and co-production options that Mexico offers. In addition to the actions that are scheduled, Mexico will participate with a panel in the Drama Series Days event with a selection of the latest production of its dramatized series together with a program of lectures on trends and industry development, which creates a platform for actors, a key in the development, production and acquisition of new contents.

As part of this proposal of the European Film Market, seven international projects will be selected in the process of creation, in order to present potential co-producers, funds and buyers.

Mexico in Focus will be held as part of the Mexico-Germany Dual Year 2016/2017, as one of the expressions of understanding and cultural, business, science and technology exchanges that both countries keep, so a large presence of Mexican producers during this Berlinale’s edition is expected.

Dieter Kosslick, director of the Berlinale, said that the relationship with Mexico has been excellent for several years, so this EFM’s commitment with Mexico through IMCINE is an opportunity to maintain cooperation, as the Berlinale will establish additional agreements to strengthen dialogue during the Dual Year.

Meanwhile, Jorge Sánchez, director of the Mexican Film Institute, said that Mexico in Focus is an important showcase for local filmmakers and their films, so "we feel very fortunate to be the country that opens this initiative. Every year the Mexican cinema has felt at home at the Berlinale and EFM, so this new partnership will strengthen relations with the festival. "

This program will be repeated in the coming years in different countries.  In this regard, the director of EFM, Matthijs Wouter Knol, said: "This initiative seeks to emphasize countries like Mexico, allowing to present themselves more extensively; it promotes the EFM connections with other productions reinforcing the exchange of the film world. Beginning this program with Mexico is the best imaginable start. "

The EFM will take place from February 9th to 17th 2017, during the 67th Berlin International Film Festival.
