The Tamayo Museum showcases the exhibition The Parks of Noguchi

The research carried out over 50 years on the public space by multifaceted artist Isamu Noguchi (Los Angeles, 1904 - New York, 1988), is presented for the first time in Mexico at the Tamayo Contemporary Art Museum.

 Presiding the opening of the exhibition, The parks of Noguchi, Rafael Tovar y de Teresa, Secretary of Culture of the Federal Government, said that the display is an extraordinary opportunity for the Mexican public.

"It will be very interesting for all of us to understand about Noguchi what the genesis is of the concept of public, recreational and sculpture art. This is an unprecedented exhibition, because it shows models, drawings, sculptures and even furniture designed by the artist in the fifties and sixties” he said.

 Accompanied by the General Director of the National Institute of Fine Arts (INBA, for its acronym in Spanish), María Cristina García Cepeda; Toru Shimizu, deputy chief of Mission of the Embassy of Japan in Mexico; Masaru Susaki, director of the Japan Foundation in Mexico, and Juan Gaitán, director of the museum; Tovar y de Teresa said that the exhibition is possibly the first in the world that brings together such a diverse material of a creative and versatile artist.

"Isamu Noguchi is an artist who spent his life in the twentieth century, who combined two great cultural traditions: the occidental, his mother was American, and the oriental, his father was Japanese; so a very original and particular figure arose, who had vocation for public spaces, where not only is public art to show to the audience but has a playful nature and playground areas become eventually sculptures, whose original intention was to give to the aesthetic a playful sense and fun of children ", the Secretary of Culture said.

He also recalled that Noguchi’s relationship with Mexico is "long-standing" reason enough it is interesting and important to know the work of one of the great sculptors of the world.

The Parks of Noguchi is an assembly focused on the vision of this artist about parks and public recreational space. The exhibition shows Isamu Noguchi’s relevant ideas about how to approach to the play, recreation and learning as well as the career of this multifaceted artist by a constant exploration of the sculptural medium, expanding it to other disciplines such as stage design, architecture, landscape and design.

Museo Tamayo has reproduced four game structures: Octetra and Game Cubes, made in concrete; Swing, a two lines structure, and Sculpture game, created under Noguchi designs, with the backing of the Isamu Noguchi Foundation in New York.

These works, which are located inside and outside the building, are part of the museum collection and will be available for visitors to the Tamayo Museum, and Chapultepec Park. It is worth noting that these structures were made in Japan four decades ago.

 The exhibition The parks of Noguchi will be open to the public until October 9th at the Tamayo Contemporary Art Museum, located in Paseo de la Reforma No. 51, corner Gandhi, Colonia Chapultepec. Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00 hours. Sunday, free entrance.
