March 19, 2016

The spiritual colors that made up the cosmogony of our ancestors were reflected again in the Pyramid of the Sun, on Friday night March 18th with the launch of the show Experiencia nocturna, inaugurated by President Enrique Peña Nieto in the archaeological area of Teotihuacan.

In the presentation of this great light and sound project, the result of an investigation of over three years, Rafael Tovar y de Teresa, Secretary of Culture; Eruviel Ávila, Governor of the State of Mexico; Enrique de la Madrid, Minister of Tourism; Gerardo Ruiz Esparza, Secretary of Communications and Transport, and María Teresa Franco, general director of the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH, for its acronym in Spanish), were present and witnessed the audiovisual conception that projects Teotihuacan's history in the Pyramid of the Sun, its foundation, beliefs, deities and its relationship with the cosmos and the sacred elements.

President Enrique Peña Nieto celebrated the start of this show that will allow visitors from Mexico and abroad to know Teotihuacan's richness, its past and its connection to the roots that gave us identity to all Mexicans.

He recalled that for almost 30 years, Teotihuacan was included in the World Heritage list by UNESCO and only in 2015, this tourist destination was visited by nearly three million national and foreign tourists, the highest figure recorded by any enclosure administered by the INAH since 1988.

"I'm sure that, in addition to provide a new experience to visitors, this project will contribute to tourist, economic and social development of the region in a sustainable manner and with full respect and care for our heritage", the president said.

The Secretary of Culture, Rafael Tovar y de Teresa, said that the lighting design, covering millions of shades of color as rain image and knowledge as well as the guides promptly meet the requirements of the Council of Archaeology and were scrupulously worked with INAH experts advice.

"Using international canons, non-intrusive, efficient, next-generation and moderate cost, low maintenance and high longevity technologies, we meet tonight with the tasks that has brought this administration to increase the access and appreciation of Mexicans to their deep and magnificent culture as a central part of our origin, which is the pride of all”.

The Secretary of Culture added that with this avant-garde experience Mexico integrates itself to presentations of the same type that are made in other heritage sites like the Muralla (Wall) of Avila in Spain; St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican; the pyramids of Giza in Egypt, or the Baths of Caracalla, in Italy.

"We start a presentation in Teotihuacan that make the most of versatility and respectful application that allow new technologies in terms of heritage preservation, to guarantee citizens the right of access to culture and cultural goods and services. Technology can be that bridge to the past and a route of knowledge that gives us light for the future. "

The governor of the state of Mexico, Eruviel Ávila Villegas, recalled that Teotihuacan was one of the most influential locations of its time with more than 100,000 inhabitants and its pyramids are, together with Egypt's, archaeological sites, so this show is without doubt the fusion of the past with the present and an unprecedented projection in Latin America's largest pyramid.
