Long lines to know his early twentieth century inventions

The future belongs to me: Nikola Tesla captures the interest of new generations

March 10, 2016

Nikola Tesla, true inventor of the radio, the alternating current, the polyphase motor, the remote control and the first transistor, a robotics pioneer; the man who registered more than 700 patents and predicted, in 1926, that someday any man could have a small wireless phone in his pocket, is remembered at the Centro Nacional de las Artes (National Arts Centre) (Cenart, for its contraction in Spanish) with a major exhibition that is equally a tribute and a fun introduction to the genius and his work.

The Secretary of Culture, Rafael Tovar y de Teresa, presided over the inauguration of The future belongs to me: Nikola Tesla, an exhibition that in its first night broke attendance records and attracted hundreds of young people who made long lines at the Cenart to approach the universe of science.

Tesla made us change the perception of the world and man to interpret our modern world better, said the Secretary of Culture welcoming this exhibition which is based on light and energy, pillars of the great inventions that Nikola Tesla produced in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Ricardo Calderón, director of Cenart; Elena Navarro, director of Canopia Mexico; Miguel Alcubierre, director of the Institute of Nuclear Sciences, UNAM; Francoise Lavertu Stevens, director of Tesla Motors Mexico, and Miguel Ángel Delgado, curator of the exhibition were present at the opening.

Tovar y de Teresa recalled that Albert Einstein himself described Tesla in a letter in 1931 as one of the creators of the contemporary world and certainly one of the great visionaries of technology to propose a different alternative to electric power, which unlike Edison, who conceived it wireless.

Regarding the limitations that Tesla had in his time to develop many of his great inventions, such as the alternating current, the wireless light and even sustainable energies that have now given way to the electric car, Rafael Tovar y de Teresa said they would have changed the twentieth century.

"Tesla is an endearing figure to be discovered again and this exhibition will allow to see him as the great man ahead of his time, who was well aware of his talent, and knew he would not be understood in his own time, so he said: I leave you the present that worry you so much, I belong to the future”, the head of Culture said.

Meanwhile, Ricardo Calderón celebrated that the 2016 exhibitions series starts with this exhibit at the Centro Nacional de la Artes (National Arts Centre) and new generations have an approach with Tesla's contributions made to modern life and how many of his patents are daily use inventions.

Over a thousand, mostly young people formed a long line outside the Galería Central (Central Gallery), to see the exhibition, which presents a chronological journey through the biography of the father of electrical civilization, his discoveries, inventions, contributions and predictions, through multimedia elements.

The exhibition which tributes 160 years of Tesla’s birth, is divided into seven sections created with the help of a group of specialists to adapt technological pieces and integrate a dynamic proposal

The future belongs to me: Nikola Tesla runs until June 12 in the Central, Alternativo y Arte Binario galleries, of Cenart located in Rio Churubusco No. 79, corner Calzada de Tlalpan, Colonia Country Club. Opening hours: Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00 hours. Free entry.
