Valery Gergiev and the Mariinsky Orchestra seduce Mexicans at the Palace of Fine Arts

The Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra was conducted by Valery Gergiev with strength, skill, energy and determination at the Palace of Fine Arts in what was his first performance in Mexico, being obvious the above because he is considered one of the most important orchestral directors of Europe .

 A standing ovation, accompanied by expressions like Awesome!, and Bravo! received the oldest and most traditional orchestra in Russia by the audience, concluding their third appearance in the building, dedicated to the composer Sergei Prokofiev, on the ocassion of the 125th anniversary of his birth.

The head conductor of the group since 1988 made his appearance on the scene, he went concentrated to his place, shook hands with the first violinist, bowed to the musicians, placed his hand on his heart, and immersed in the music of Prokofiev, whom he considers one of his heroes, and whose work is an important part of the Mariinsky Theatre and its concert posters in Russia.

 The third and final presentation of the orchestra which was founded in the eighteenth century during the reign of Catherine the Great, began with the execution of a light and optimistic music, the symphony No. 1 in D major op. 25, Classical, in its allegro movements, larghetto, gavotta: allegro non troppo, and finale: molto vivace.

 In this and subsequent interpretations, the director awarded the Order of Friendship and the Order of St. Mesrop Mashtots, the highest awards in Russia and the Republic of Armenia, seemed to conduct with his eyes without losing detail of the execution of string, wind and percussion instruments rather than with the baton.

 The second piece of Prokofiev that sounded was the symphony concertante for cello and orchestra in E minor, op. 125, where the 24 year old, Russian, soloist Ivan Karizna, showed his technique, virtuosity and quality, standing out in the different solos played along with the four movements that make up the piece, which the audience recognized with loud applause.

 The third and last musical composition of the program was symphony No. 5 in B flat major op. 100, considered by Prokofiev himself as the best of his pieces because expresses the greatness of the human spirit.

 Valery Gergiev seemed to conduct the orchestra at will, while the musicians played softer and lighter sounds, passing to the strength and energy imperceptibly, and surprising also for the synchronization of their movements playing their instruments.

 After the last note of the allegro giocoso movement of symphony No. 5, the silence was broken with loud applause that lasted for several minutes.

The audience applauded the director Valeri Gergiev, the Russian artist awarded the honorary title of artist in the world in 2003 by UNESCO, who returned to the stage to offer two encores: The overture The strength of destiny by Giuseppe Verdi, and Swan lake by Chaikovski, leaving a pleasant experience for the public who enjoyed more than two hours of music.

 The Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra will offer its fourth and final presentation in Mexico tonight at the National Auditorium, with the solo pianist Sergei Redkin participation, at 20:30 hours, under Valery Gergiev's baton.

 The program will consist of the Polovtsian Dances of Borodin Aleksandr; Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 1 in B flat minor, op.23 by Pyotr Ilyich Chaikovski; The Firebird (short version) by Igor Stravinsky; and 1812 Overture, op. 49, also by Chaikovski.
