For the first time in Mexico

The Mariinsky Theater Orchestra, a group with its own style

The Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra of St. Petersburg, considered one of the top 20 musical ensembles of its kind in the world, will be in Mexico with a series of concerts to be held at the Palace of Fine Arts and the National Auditorium, in the early days of March.

 The group founded in the late eighteenth century will present their virtuosity and tradition with a program constituted by great Russian composer´s music such as Prokófiev, Rajmáninov, Rimski-Korsákov and Shostakóvich.

 The Russian ambassador to Mexico, R. Eduard Malayan, considered this cultural event very important in Mexico, not only in the life of the country, but in the relations between Russia and Mexico. "This is one of the great and big demonstrations we've had in recent years in this country," he said.

 Its head conductor Valery Gergiev, said, in video conference, that concert goers will enjoy a representation of the Russian musical tradition, performed by young musicians who have mastered this tradition. "It's a good program. Of course I like very much German and French authors. We have a varied repertoire, but on our first visit to Mexico we want to make a presentation of Russian authors "he said.

 He said that over the years and the changing context, the Orchestra maintains its tone, virtuosic performance and excellence because there is a union and perfect link between the musicians and the director, which can be seen in their presentations in Mexico.

 The orchestra director commented the concerts programming: at the Palace of Fine Arts, on March 1, they will play Shostakovich, Festive Overture; Rajmáninov, Rhapsody on a theme of Paganini / Symphony No. 2. On Wednesday March 2, they will perform Rimsky-Korsakov's Overture,The great Russian Easter; Rachmaninoff, Piano Concerto No. 2 and Shostakovich, Symphony No. 5.

In both presentations Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra will be under the baton of guest conductor Elim Chan, originally from Hong Kong, and Behzod Abduraimov on the piano.

 En el concierto del jueves 3 de marzo Valeri Gergiev estará al frente de la agrupación, se ejecutará de Prokófiev la Sinfonía No. 1, Clásica, la Sinfonía No. 5, y la Sinfonía concertante para violonchelo y orquesta, en la que estará como invitado el violonchelista Ivan Karizna. “Prokófiev es un compositor maravilloso, uno de mis héroes de toda la vida”, compartió.

Valery Gergiev will conduct the group on Thursday, March 3 playing Prokofiev's Symphony No. 1, Classical, Symphony No. 5, and Concertante Symphony for cello and orchestra, being as guest cellist Ivan Karizna. "Prokofiev is a wonderful composer, one of my lifelong heroes," he shared.

 On Friday March 4, the concert at the National Auditorium will also be conducted by Russian director; the program will be formed by Polovtsian Dances of Aleksandr Borodin; Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 1 in B flat minor, Op.23 by Pyotr Ilyich Chaikovski; The Firebird (short version) by Igor Stravinsky; and 1812 Overture, Op. 49, also by Chaikovski. Sergei Redkin will play as a solo pianist.

 “We will present a popular program for thousands of music fans at the National Auditorium", he said regarding his presentation at the Palace of Fine Arts.

 The director of the group since 1988 shared that most musicians playing in the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra have been musically educated in Russia. "We have great professionals from other countries, such as Vietnam, Colombia, Germany, Ukraine, which is a very significant factor. I think it is very important the orchestra has its own style"

 "We work with sound, color, of course I like to have a bright and wonderful sound and try to achieve it. The Marrinsky Orchestra is very diverse, has many facets" Valeri Gergiev said

 

Russian Gala

At the same time to this series of presentations, on Wednesday 2 and Thursday, March 3, at 20:00 pm, young artists Myra Huang (piano), Vladimir Varnava (dancer and choreographer) and Dmitry Grigoriev (bass), will offer a Russian Gala at the Centro Nacional de las Artes (National Arts Centre), where they will perform a program that will include several Russian operas, ballads, folk songs and improvising choreographies. Both presentations will be at 20:00 pm in the Teatro de las Artes (Theater of the Arts).

 Regarding the above artists, Valery Gergiev explained that they are talented and brilliant, and noted the importance of young people with expertise support young promises.

 Both the Mariinsky Foundation and Gergiev have the mission to support young artists, as guest director and the three guest soloists who share two characteristics: talent and be under 30 years old.

The three concerts at the Palace of Fine Arts will be transmitted via streaming to Aguascalientes, Monterrey and Tijuana, among other cities.
